Watch: In the third ODI against New Zealand, in Indore, Ishan Kishan was run out following an unfortunate mix-up with Virat Kohli.
Having secured a 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series, the India openers blazed away to an exceptional start after Tom Latham opted to bowl at the Holkar Cricket Stadium.
Rohit Sharma (101 in 85 balls, nine fours, six sixes) broke a 1,101-day century drought in the format, while Shubman Gill (112 in 78 balls, 13 fours, five sixes) equalled Babar Azam’s world record of 360 runs in a three-match men’s ODI series.
The pair added 212 in 26.1 overs before falling in the space of 12 balls, first Rohit, then Gill. Kishan walked out to join Kohli at the fall of Gill’s wicket.
He began tentatively, managing only six off the first 16 balls he faced, before slog-sweeping Mitchell Santner for six. In the next over, he slapped a ball from Michael Bracewell through extra-cover for four.
By the time Jacob Duffy came on to bowl, Kishan was already on 17. He pushed at the third ball of the over and set off for a single, to which Kohli responded. As Daryl Mitchell swooped down on the ball, Kishan changed his mind and turned back towards his crease.
As Kohli continued with his sprint, Mitchell jogged towards the non-striker’s end and whipped the bails off. By then, Kishan had slowed down to a jog, but Kohli had not slowed down. Inevitably, Kohli overtook Kishan before Mitchell could effect the run out. Anil Chaudhary, the TV umpire, sent Kishan back.
Kohli eventually fell for a 27-ball 36. India were reduced to 313-6 before Hardik Pandya (54 in 38 balls) and Shardul Thakur (25 in 17) took them to 385-9 as Duffy and Blair Tickner claimed three wickets apiece.
India went on to win the match by 90 runs, despite Devon Conway’s second ODI hundred in just two weeks, and third international century of 2023. Shardul Thakur and Kuldeep Yadav took three wickets apiece as New Zealand were bowled out for 295.
