Watch: Australian skipper Meg Lanning crashes the bat into her own stumps, while playing a shot that sent the ball to the ropes.
Meg Lanning was the architect of her own dismissal in Australia’s 14-run win over India at Carrara. In the seventh over of the innings, Australia added six runs off its first five deliveries before Lanning decided to cut a short, wide ball from Rajeshwari Gayakwad
As soon as she played the shot, it was evident that her cut shot had dislodged one of the bails. Behind the stumps, wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh appealed straightaway, so much so that the India fielders did not chase the ball as it hurtled towards the boundary.
Replays showed that Lanning had hit her own stumps while attempting the shot. Though the delivery had been dispatched for a four, since the batter was hit wicket no runs were awarded to Australia.
The dismissal meant that Lanning became the first Australian woman to be dismissed hit wicket in T20Is.
