Watch: Mayank Agarwal, slotted into the middle order for the first time in his Test career, smashed a 102-metre six off Nathan Lyon on the third day of the Brisbane Test.
Shunted down the order after India recalled him for the final Test, having left him out of the previous game at the expense of Rohit Sharma as opener, Mayank walked out after Cheteshwar Pujara became Australia’s first wicket of the day. By lunch, he had played out 73 deliveries for a fluent 38, hitting three fours, as well as one glorious six off Nathan Lyon.
The six was a regal hit over long-on, dancing down to the pitch to the delivery and walloping it over the fence with a clean strike. A fielder was stationed at the fence, but could only watch helplessly as the ball sailed over his head and into the stands.
The six epitomised Mayank’s free-flowing approach in the first session of the day, looking to keep the run-rate ticking after a steady start by the overnight pair of Ajinkya Rahane and Pujara.
The joy was short-lived though; having successfully dealt with the Australian bowlers for the first session, Mayank became Australia’s third scalp of the day soon after lunch, edging one to the slips off Josh Hazlewood.
