The Lancashire and England leggie has already contributed three beauties to the canon of unplayable wrist-spin deliveries this summer, two for Lancashire in the County Championship, to Adam Rossington and Delray Rawlins, and one for England in ODI cricket. This time, the delivery came in The Hundred, for Manchester Originals at Old Trafford against Birmingham Phoenix.
On a pitch taking spin, Parkinson started well, taking 1-9 in his first 15 balls. When he came on to bowl his final set of five, Birmingham Phoenix were struggling, with three wickets in hand. Parkinson needed just four balls to finish them off, with the prize wicket the first one. Wicketkeeper-batsman Chris Cooke was flummoxed by a ball which drifted and pitched outside leg-stump before turning sharply to hit off-stump.
Parkinson’s figures eventually read 4-9 in 19 balls, the best economy rate in an innings in The men’s Hundred so far, with Birmingham Phoenix’s 87 the lowest team total of the tournament so far.
