Wood had broken through twice earlier in the day, removing both openers with his searing pace, but it was bounce more than speed which accounted for Pujara. The steadfast top-order batsman had kept out more than 200 deliveries up until that point, but had yet to bring up his half-century, and was denied the chance of a milestone with a brute of a delivery from the England speedster.
The ball leapt off the pitch, with Pujara rearing out the way but thrusting his bat instinctively towards it. The fend looped up behind square on the off-side, with Joe Root claiming a simple catch.
It seemed as if it would take something unplayable to remove Pujara, and that’s exactly what Wood provided.
