Watch: England’s new recruit Mahika Gaur, who previously represented the UAE, dismissed Chamari Athapaththu with a jaffa for her first-ever ODI wicket during the first ODI against Sri Lanka on Saturday (September 9) and repeated the trick soon after.

The 17-year-old Gaur played 19 T20Is for the UAE, before deciding to represent England, making her 20-over debut for the side last week. Incidentally, Gaur’s first T20I wicket for her new team had also been Athapaththu, when she sent her back with an away-swinger.

Gaur never played an ODI for UAE, and she made the most of the opportunity when she was named in England’s XI for their clash against Sri Lanka at Chester-le-Street, accounting for two wickets in two overs.

On the last ball of the fifth over, Gaur sent a delivery that came in before it moved away to smash into the Sri Lanka captain’s off stump. Overall, it was the third time that Athapaththu was dismissed by Gaur, with the teenager also dismissing her in a T20I last year, when she was still playing for the UAE.

In the very next over that Gaur bowled, she dismissed Anushka Sanjeewani with a delivery that angled in from round the wicket. The opener looked to drive, but the ball snuck past her edge and crashed into the middle stump.

Courtesy of the twin setbacks, Sri Lanka were reduced to 26-2 in 6.4 overs.
