After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Sri Lanka started excellently. Skipper Dimuth Karunaratne and Danushka Gunathilaka had put on over 100 between them by the time Pollard brought himself on to bowl in the 20th over.
Pollard broke the partnership with just his second delivery as he deceived Karunaratne with an off-cutter that was spooned back towards the bowler. Initially, Pollard did superbly to even get a hand on the ball but the contact deflected the ball away from Pollard to his right. Just about regaining his balance, Pollard was able to dive across the adjacent strip to take a superb one-handed diving catch.
