Watch: Josh Hazlewood effected an electric run out to dismiss Hanuma Vihari and leave India four down in their first innings against Australia in the third Test at the SCG.
The wicket came in the 68th over of the innings, with Vihari having scratched his way to four off 38. In an effort to rotate the strike, he called his partner Cheteshwar Pujara through for a quick single having pushed down the ground, but didn’t account for the cat-like reflexes of Hazlewood, who dove, gathered the ball and released in one motion, catching the No.5 short with a direct hit.
“Can you believe it?” said Shane Warne on commentary. “That is absolutely outstanding from any fielder, let alone your big fast bowler in the middle of a spell.”
The dismissal continued a poor run of form for Vihari against Test cricket’s top nations. While he averages a respectable 31.63 overall, that includes an average of 96.33 in two Tests at home against West Indies, with a century and two fifties in four innings.
In his other 10 Tests, against Australia, England, New Zealand and South Africa, he averages just 19.30, with a high score of 56. Still, in this instance, it was a piece of fielding brilliance, rather than any technical deficiency, that saw him dismissed.
