Watch: Jonny Bairstow took a stunning one-handed slip catch to dismiss KL Rahul on the stroke of lunch as India finished the first session of the third England-India Test on 34-1.
England had added just nine runs to their overnight score of 423-8 before Craig Overton and Ollie Robinson fell to Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah.
India looked to have finally won a session in this Test match as Rahul and Rohit Sharma expertly navigated a testing opening spell from England’s seamers. However, whilst Anderson and Robinson went wicketless, Craig Overton made the breakthrough in his sixth over and with the last ball before lunch as Rahul fell. However, it was Bairstow who was the star of the dismissal.
The delivery moved away from Rahul and took his outside edge before flying in between Joe Root at first slip and Bairstow at second. Falling to his left, Bairstow flung his hand out and saw the ball stick in the middle of his palm. The reaction spoke of joy and surprise that the stunning catch had been grasped.
Bairstow does not traditionally field in the slips for England. However the multiple changes in the side has seen him take up a position at second slip. If he continues to take catches like this, no doubt he will be fielding there for a while.
