Watch: England captain Joe Root could be seen injecting some energy into his side’s fielding effort at Galle in amusing fashion with a spot of surf-dancing.

With the game played behind closed doors, the heat sapping, and Sri Lanka putting up much more resistance than in the first Test, England’s enthusiasm could have quickly ebbed. Instead, they stuck to their task to end the first day with the honours at least even, after reducing Sri Lanka to 229-4.

England’s bowlers all stuck at their tasks manfully, and Root did his utmost to keep them entertained. Shortly after Mark Wood had claimed the key wicket of Dinesh Chandimal for 52, the skipper could be seen pretending to surf in the outfield, to the mirth of the on-air commentators and England’s followers on social media.
