Watch: England captain Joe Root was cleaned up by a pinpoint yorker on the opening day of England’s sole warm-up game ahead of their three-match Test series against West Indies.
Facing a strong Cricket West Indies President’s XI that featured five Test cricketers, England had a good day with the bat on their first day on the field since their abject Ashes campaign. They reached stumps on 251-4 with all of their new-look top three of Zak Crawley, Alex Lees and Root reaching fifty. Dan Lawrence, batting at four ahead of Ollie Pope, finished the day unbeaten on 46.
The only low score of the day belonged to Ben Stokes who fell to the off-spin of Bryan Charles for 11, feeding a catch to first slip after driving hard at a delivery outside off stump.
Prior to his dismissal, Joe Root was in typically fluent touch. His innings came to an end after receiving a pinpoint yorker from Shermon Lewis – a 26-year-old right-arm quick who played two Tests for West Indies back in 2018 – that beat Root’s defence before cannoning into his stumps.
