Watch: England skipper Joe Root bowled Washington Sundar with the perfect off-break in his record-breaking spell of 5-8 in the third Test against India in Ahmedabad.
India were in a dominant position on the second morning, with Rohit Sharma at the crease and the score at 99-3, responging to England’s first innings 112. However, Root turned things around for the hosts, stepping up with the ball this time to keep the lead to just 33 runs.
While the England skipper dismissed five India batsmen, his best delivery came against Sundar. Giving the ball excellent loop, Root produced a dream off-spin delivery to lure the left-hander onto his front foot, before generating turn and bounce to clip the off stump.
“He’s been beaten all ends up by an absolute beauty from Root,” said Graeme Swann on commentary.
No bowler has ever taken five or more wickets in India while conceding fewer runs than Root did. His figures were also the best by an England captain since Bob Willis in 1982.
