Watch: Jake Weatherald was at the centre of a bizarre incident during a Sheffield Shield clash between South Australia and Queensland, kicking away a helmet placed on the crease by opposition fielder Matt Renshaw, leading to an exchange of words with opposition skipper Usman Khawaja and a chat with the umpires.
Weatherald was having a mid-pitch chat with his South Australia opening partner Henry Hunt at the end of the eighth over when Renshaw deposited a fielding helmet on the crease directly in front of the stumps.
It’s unclear why the helmet was placed where it was, but when Weatherald trotted to his mark, he gave the headgear a mighty whack with his right foot, sending it flying in the direction of the square-leg umpire, who saw the strange series of events unfolding.
The on-air commentator observed that the Queensland slip cordon had been playing around with the helmet.
Soon after, Khawaja was seen animatedly having a discussion with Weatherald, with the on-field umpire too making his way to the crease to have a chat with the batter.
Weatherald, then on 9, added 17 more runs before he was caught by Renshaw, the very fielder who had put the helmet on the pitch.
