California Knights’ opening match, against the New Jersey Triton’s at Lauderhill, was washed out without a ball being bowled. In their next match, against the Texas Chargers, Knights captain Suresh Raina won the toss and opted to bat.

Texas struck with the second ball, when wicketkeeper Ben Dunk took an outstanding catch off Fidel Edwards to send Aaron Finch back. Milind Kumar walked out to join Kallis.

In the second over, bowled by Sohail Tanvir, Kallis edged the first ball and cut the second, both went for boundaries. Off the third ball, he unleashed his trademark cover-drive for a third consecutive four, and rounded off the over with a fourth.

Milind quickly outscored Kallis, who continued to score at brisk pace. In the ninth over, he lofted Edwards over square leg and scooped him over fine leg for two sixes: the second of the shots took him to his fifty, off a mere 26 balls.

He hit a third six in the final over, blasting a full-toss from Umar Gul over the mid-wicket fence, and rounded off the innings with a swept four. Kallis’ 31-ball unbeaten 64 included eight fours and three sixes.

At the other end, Milind remained unbeaten on a 28-ball 76 as California finished on 158-1. Despite Mukhtar Ahmed’s early onslaught (33 in 10 balls), Texas lost their way and against Ashley Nurse (3-12) and could only make 110-8.
