Waqar Younis prompted laughter amongst his fellow pundits after landing way off the mark in stating the age of Pakistan batter Iftikhar Ahmed, who he previously coached.
On The Pavilion, a television programme in Pakistan, Waqar was sat alongside Wasim Akram, Misbah-ul-Haq and Wahab Riaz when he was asked by the show’s anchor whether Iftikhar and others could replace Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik in the Pakistan line-up when the veteran pair eventually retire.
While Malik, who debuted in international cricket in the 20th century, is 39, Hafeez is 41.
Responding to the anchor, Younis said: “I think Iftikhar, he’s same age as Malik. Same age? I’m not sure to be honest.”
Younis’ response prompted laughter from Wahab sat next to him, with Iftikhar actually eight years junior to Malik.
Wasim, also laughing, said: “I think you coached him for a couple of years..”
Younis was Pakistan’s bowling coach for two years before stepping down this September.
Younis responded to Akram: “I coached him, I don’t know his age!”
