Watch: Issy Wong took the first-ever hat-trick in the Women’s Premier League today (Match 24), castling Sophie Ecclestone as Mumbai Indians sealed their place in the inaugural tournament final.
Bowling in the 13th over of the Eliminator match against UP Warriorz, Wong had already taken the important wicket of Alyssa Healy with her second delivery in the match. Now faced with Kiran Navgire on 43, with Warriorz needing 99 runs to win, Wong sealed her place in the WPL record books.
She missed her length and bowled a full toss to Navgire, who advanced down the wicket and pulled towards deep mid-wicket. There wasn’t enough on the shot to clear the fielder on the boundary, however, Nat Sciver-Brunt taking an easy catch above her head.
Her next delivery was fuller, pitching at a yorker length on middle angling towards leg. Simran Shaikh the new batter, she tried to cream the ball for four through the on side but missed completely. The ball clattered into her leg stump, lighting up the zing bails. Wong wheeled away in celebration with her finger in the air before high-fiving one of her teammates.
Next out to the middle was Wong’s England teammate, Sophie Ecclestone. She bowled the hat-trick delivery wider this time, on off-stump on a slightly shorter length. Ecclestone looked to punch the ball down the ground but could get an inside edge. The ball ricocheted onto her middle and leg stumps to give Wong a famous achievement.
She set off running in celebration, arms outstretched as her teammates ran to high-five her. With a full crowd cheering loudly as Wong celebrated, the commentator said: “We have a hat-trick! Issy Wong go for your little run around the stadium you have created history in the TATA WPL!”
Wong finished the match with figures of 4-15, her best from the competition. UP Warriorz were bowled out for 110 as they lost by 72 runs. Mumbai Indians will face Delhi Capitals in the inaugural tournament final on Sunday (March 26).
