Watch: Irfan Pathan fumed at brother Yusuf after he was run out following miscommunication during the 15th match of World Championship of Legends 2024 between India Champions and South Africa Champions.
The target of 210 in 20 overs looked well out of reach of India as they required 79 from the last 12 balls. Irfan Pathan, batting on 34 off 20, tried to clear the first ball of the 19th over by Dale Steyn over long-off but ended up lobbing it just outside the inner circle. South Africa skipper Jaques Kallis dived but couldn’t reach in time.
Irfan ran the first run hard and set off for a double. Yusuf turned down the call, but it was too late by then, as Irfan had already made it to the mid-pitch. A well-directed throw from Dane Vilas, who came running in from the deep, helped Steyn dislodge the bails at the non-striker’s end, catching Irfan well short of his crease.
The all-rounder was livid at his elder brother’s non-response to his call for a double. He shouted and gestured angrily towards Yusuf before returning to the pavilion in frustration. India lost the match by 54 runs. Despite the defeat, they have qualified for the knockouts and will play Australia Champions in the second semi-final on July 24.
