Watch: N Jagadeesan flipped the finger in anger after he suffered a Mankad dismissal during a 2022 Tamil Nadu Premier League clash between Chepauk Super Gillies and Nellai Royal Kings.
Playing for Chepauk Super Gillies, opener Jagadeesan was found out of his crease before the third ball of the third over was delivered in his side’s run chase of 185. Bowler Baba Aparajith, upon spotting Jagadeesan backing up too far, stopped midway through his run-up and immediately whipped off the bails, leading to the non-striker’s dismissal.
Jagadeesan, who represents Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, was unable to control his temper and showed the middle finger twice to the fielding side as he walked back to the pavilion for a 15-ball 25. Both Jagadeesan and Aparajith are state teammates, representing Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket. The on-air commentators admitted the dismissal was not “really nice” but defended Aparajith by saying, “Even if it does not seem to be very nice, all is fair in war, and if they have to do this for winning the game, probably it’s not at all wrong because it’s well within the rules of the game.”
The game eventually went to a Super Over, where Nellai Royal Kings emerged victorious.
Jagadeesan later took to Twitter to apologise for his “inexcusable behaviour” during the game.

“My deepest apologies to all of you for my inexcusable behaviour at yesterday’s match,” he wrote. “Cricket has always been what I live for – and the sportsmanship that comes along with the sport is something I deeply respect. Which is why it is very hard for me to digest how I reacted. Passion is always key in any sport – but controlling it and channelising it the right way is more important. And that is something I failed at doing when I let my temper get the better of me. No excuses for what has been done. I will do better and be better.”
The mode of running out a batter at the non-striker’s end, known as the Mankad, has been a major topic point in the cricketing circles for being against the ‘Spirit of the Game’ especially after Ravichandran Ashwin infamously dismissed Jos Buttler during an IPL game in 2019. To reduce the controversies that erupted every time a player was out, the MCC changed the Mankad into an official mode of dismissal earlier this year, moving it from the ‘unfair play’ category to the ‘run out’ section.
