Supporters of both India and Pakistan were at the stadium in Birmingham to watch the WCL match between the two teams – but England’s Euros quarter-final proved to be more pressing viewing.
Fans of the Pakistan and India cricket teams headed to Edgbaston in droves to watch the anticipated WCL fixture between the bitter rivals. Pakistan trounced India by 68 runs in the game, but in the end, the result didn’t matter much to either set of fans.
The significance of the cricket on show – an exhibition match between two teams comprised entirely of former internationals from the cricketing giants – paled in comparison to England’s Euros quarter-final against Switzerland, which went to penalties after nothing separated the teams at the end of extra time.
A clip posted on social media yesterday by a fan has since gone viral. It shows the two sets of supporters gathered shoulder to shoulder to watch the penalty shootout, which England won after each English penalty taker scored after the first Swiss penalty taker missed his spot-kick.
Pakistan and India cricket fans stood with bated breath as Trent Alexander-Arnold stepped up to take what would be the decisive penalty. They erupted in celebration as soon as they saw the net rustle when Alexander-Arnold smashed the ball into the top-left corner, past the Swiss keeper, in what is an undoubtedly wholesome video celebrating Birmingham’s British-Indian and British-Pakistani cultural identity.
