Watch: Axar Patel, not picked in India’s XI for the World Test Championship final, made an impact as a substitute fielder, running out Mitchell Starc with a direct hit as India surged back into the contest on day two today (June 8).

Australia ended the first day on top, with Travis Head blitzing a century and Steve Smith nearing a ton of his own. The began the second on 372-3, with Smith moving to a century inside the first over and Head bringing up 150 not long after.

Another long day in the field looked inevitable. Instead, India surged back with four wickets on the first morning, including both set batters. The last of the quartet of scalps came not via a bowler, but from sub-fielder Axar.

Starc pushed the ball down the ground and set off, backing the ball to beat the fielder. He hadn’t accounted for Axar’s reach or athleticism, with the tall left-arm spinner swooping to grab the ball and release in one fluid motion, catching the left-arm quick short of his ground.

Australia reached the break on 422-7.
