Watch: Haris Rauf effected a skilful, unusual run out in the T20 Blast for Yorkshire Vikings, nailing a direct hit despite the stumps already having been disturbed.
The Pakistan speedster ran out Worcestershire Rapids’ Gareth Roderick for a golden duck, completing an excellent fielding effort off his own bowling.
The wicket came on the second ball of Rauf’s third over. The right-arm quick bowled a slower bouncer to Roderick, who mistimed a pull shot back down the pitch and into the stumps at the non-striker’s end.
With the timber disturbed and the ball rolling into the leg-side, the Worcestershire Rapids pair attempted a sneaky single. However, while the left bail had been removed, the right bail had somehow stayed in place, leaving Rauf with an opportunity as he hared to gather the ball.
The 28-year-old still had plenty of work to do, with a direct hit needed and only one bail left to remove; had Rauf struck the already-disturbed stump, then unless the stump was removed from the ground, Roderick would have been home safe.
As it was, the other bail was removed, and Roderick was dismissed. The ‘Wicket Put Down’ Law (Law 29) states: “The wicket is put down if a bail is completely removed from the top of the stumps, or a stump is struck out of the ground by the ball.”
If both bails are removed, then the wicket can be put down “if a fielder strikes…a stump…with his/her hand or arm, providing that the ball is held in the hand or hands so used, or in the hand of the arm so used.”
