Watch: During the first ODI between India and New Zealand, in Uppal, Hyderabad, Hardik Pandya was given out bowled in controversial fashion.
Rohit Sharma (34) and Shubman Gill added 60 for the opening stand at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium after India opted to bat. However, a mini-collapse followed as Rohit, Virat Kohli (8), and Ishan Kishan (5) fell in quick succession before Suryakumar Yadav blazed away to a 26-ball 31.
At 175-4 in the 29th over, India needed a reasonably partnership before the final blast. Hardik Pandya (28) stayed put, allowing Gill to score his hundred and helping add 74 for the fifth wicket.
The score read 249-4 in 39.3 overs when Daryl Mitchell came to bowl at Pandya. The ball was on off-stump, Pandya went down on his back knee in an attempt to steer it, and a bail came off. Played on, was Ravi Shastri’s verdict on air, as the umpires referred to television umpire KN Ananthapadmanabhan.
Replays revealed that the bail had come off… but there was no evidence of the ball hitting the wicket. The ball had lodged into the big gloves of Tom Latham, but UltraEdge confirmed that there was no edge either.
Split-screen replays also revealed an angle where the ball passed above the wicket. “As it crosses the stumps, at least an inch, inch and a half above the stumps” was Shastri’s verdict. The ball had almost certainly come off Latham’s gloves.
Yet, to the shock of everyone, Pandya was ruled out, bowled. Shortly afterwards, during another set of replays, Shastri commented “ball clearly looks to be above the bails.”
More drama followed in the next over, when Gill cut Michael Bracewell for two – and the bails were spotted on the ground. This time it was evident that the bails had come off following a contact with Latham’s gloves.
At the time of writing, India had finished on 349-8 in 50 overs. Shubman Gill finished on a 149-ball 208.
Forget about split screens and replays, the cut shot from Shubhman Gill proved why Hardik was clearly Not Out. #indvsnz
