Watch: Glenn Maxwell, who last played a red-ball game in July 2023, hit the first ball he faced in the format for a huge six.

The Australian all-rounder has played just two first-class matches in the last five years, with his his last Test match tracing back to 2017. He returned to the longer format in Cricket Australia’s Second XI four-day competition, being named in Victoria’s 12-member side to play Queensland from Monday (October 14) at the Junction Oval.

He started his innings in style: Walking out at No.4, Maxwell, facing the first ball from Jack Sinfield, smashed it for a maximum. However, he made only 14 before he was dismissed. What was interesting about the game was that there was no mention of Maxwell, playing in a second XI for the first time in 15 years, on the scorecard.

The live stream had his name in asterisks when Maxwell was batting and he was listed as a “Fill-in” in the scorecard, presumably because of some issue with his player account not being calibrated properly in the scoring software.

He also bowled six overs and picked up a wicket.

Maxwell could potentially make a Test return during Australia's tour of Sri Lanka in early 2025, with Cricket Australia carefully monitoring his workload after a horrific leg injury he suffered two years ago.
