Playing for the India Capitals, Gautam Gambhir hit a six and a four off the first two balls Sreesanth bowled for the Gujarat Giants in the match. Sreesanth followed it up by a wider ball, prompting Gambhir to play it straight to the fielder at short cover.
While walking back to his bowling position, Sreesanth turned around and seemingly uttered a few words at Gambhir, who stared back and gestured with his hands.
A few overs later, the two were involved in a prolonged exchange and needed to be separated by Gujarat wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel and the on-field umpires. Sreesanth, clearly angered by the natter, had to be dragged away by his teammates; he later confirmed that Gambhir had kept calling him rude names without any provocation.
Sreesanth had been banned for life by the BCCI in the 2013 IPL spot-fixing case and was later acquitted of criminal charges. His ban was reduced to seven years in 2019.
