Having starred with Mohammed Shami in an unbeaten 89-run, ninth-wicket stand, Bumrah returned not long after to his usual role of taking the new ball. He struck soon enough, sending back opener Burns from the fourth ball of the innings. The ball was angled to the leg stump, with Burns trying to prod it to the leg side. It moved enough to open his stance a tad, and he ended up merely lobbing it in the air.
The ball flew towards Mohammed Siraj at short cover, who took just a few steps in front of him to pouch the catch, kickstarting wild celebrations in the Indian camp.
It was Burns’ fifth duck in twelve Test innings this year – he was twice dismissed for zero on England’s tour to India earlier this year.
The dismissal left England’s score on 1-1, which soon became 1-2 with Mohammed Shami striking not long after to send back Dom Sibley, the other opener.
