Watch: A fake throw from Bangladesh fielder Shahadat Hossain followed by a hilarious overthrow allowed Sri Lanka’s batters a rare, all-run four in the Road Safety World Series 2022, a T20 legends league.
The first error came from Sri Lanka batter Mahela Udawatte, who could only top-edge an attempted pull over the keeper’s head. The ball span as it landed, racing away from the chasing Shahadat Hossain and allowing the Sri Lanka batters to run two. Then things took a strange turn. Perhaps seeing that the keeper wasn’t in position, Shahadat faked a throw at the stumps, before dropping his head and ambling slowly forward, tossing the ball up to himself.
Udawatte, seeing the fielder dozing, called Tillakaratne Dilshan through to steal an extra run. The japes didn’t end there. Shahadat belatedly threw the ball, but inaccurately, with the ball flying past the batting strip, and allowing the Sri Lanka pair to compete an all-run four. Sri Lanka went on to post a mammoth total of 213-5.
After a poor performance with the ball, Bangladesh fell well short of their target, losing by 70 runs. Dilshan went on to be awarded Player of the Match for his half-century with the bat and three wickets from his three overs in the Bangladesh innings. The loss is Bangladesh’s fourth of the competition while Sri Lanka sit at the top of the table and are yet to lose a game ahead of their fixture against the West Indies on Saturday.
