Watch: In a bizarre turn of events, England U19 batters Aaryan Sawant and Archie Vaughan managed to run seven runs against South Africa in Stellenbosch on Wednesday (January 22).
In the third ODI of the three-match series, England elected to bat first at the Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch.
It was a quiet start as South Africa's opening bowlers, Raeeq Daniels and Carl Fryer, kept things tight. At the end of five overs, the score read 9-0, and after the sixth it was 10-1 as Ben Dawkins fell to Fryer. Off the second ball of the seventh over, Ben mayes had to walk back for two off 24 balls to leave his side 10-2.
Aaryan Sawant then joined Archie Vaughan, yet to face a ball, in the middle. He was beaten outside off on his first delivery, but off the second managed to middle a full delivery through the off side.
Two fielders gave chase as the ball headed for the boundary, and it was just about pulled in. The batters had run three by that point, but as the throw came in from the deep it skipped across the pitch, and with no one backing up, they snuck in a fourth run.
But after the overthrow, as the ball was returned, there was once again no backup, and the ball sped away in the direction of mid-off. Both batters were alert and set off between the wickets again. This time, the ball plugged in the outfield and stopped before the boundary – but there was enough time for Sawant and Vaughan to come back for three more runs; making it a total of seven off that delivery.
