Watch: Ellyse Perry was run out in a bizarre fashion by wicketkeeper Isabella Gaze when she tried to run a single after losing sight of the ball upon attempting a shot during the second T20I between Australia and New Zealand Women today (September 22).
The incident happened in the 12th over of Australia’s innings when New Zealand all-rounder Amelia Kerr was bowling her second over from over the wicket. Against Kerr’s leg breaks, Perry tried to sweep a leg-stump full-toss. The ball hit her boot and lobbed straight up in the air, rolling to wicketkeeper Isabella Gaze.
The fielding side appealed for an LBW dismissal. However, Perry, by then had lost sight of the ball, and she frantically looked for it before setting off for a single. Gaze took the opportunity and broke the stumps, running Perry out for a 33-ball 34.
Batting first, Australia were all out for 142 in 19.3 overs, with captain Alyssa Healy top-scoring with a 25-ball 38. Kerr was the pick of the New Zealand bowlers, with figures of 4-20 off her four overs. Brooke Halliday, Eden Carson, Fran Jonas and Lea Tahuhu were also amongst the wickets.
Australia then restricted New Zealand to 113-7 to win the match by 29 runs.
Coincidentally, two similar incidents happened this week. During Afghanistan’s historic series win against South Africa, Andile Phehlukwayo was run out comically when he left the crease while the ball was in the slip fielder's hands.
The other incident happened at the County Championship. Lancashire batter George Balderson was well out of his crease when a Somerset slip fielder threw the ball at the stumps. However, in this case, the batter got a reprieve as the run-out appeal was turned down by the umpire.
