Watch: Cheteshwar Pujara was the victim of a perfect setup from Dale Steyn during the 2018 County Championship, falling prey to an outswing trap that ended with a beautiful inswinger clattering his stumps.
Steyn announced his retirement from all cricket on August 31, bringing to a close an esteemed career that saw him establish himself as one of the greatest quicks the game has ever seen. Across 16 years, Steyn picked up 699 international wickets, finishing as South Africa’s second-highest international wicket-taker.
Even though the last few years of Steyn’s career were heavily disrupted by injury, he pulled off bits of brilliance time and again, including a fruitful county stint with Hampshire. Returning from injury, Steyn featured in five first-class games for Hampshire, including one against Yorkshire, who had signed up Pujara as their overseas player.
At the Ageas Oval, Steyn, partnering with Fidel Edwards to take the new ball, pierced through Yorkshire’s batting order with a five-wicket haul, including a seven-ball set-up of Pujara that ended with him cleaning up the India batsman.
Steyn peppered Pujara with his trademark outswinger, keeping the ball on off and moving it away from the right-hander. Pujara left five of them and defended one, even earning a little applause from non-striker Adam Lyth along the way.
Off the third delivery of the sixth over, Pujara was left in tatters when he played the wrong line, possibly predicting another away swinger, but ended up leaving considerable gap between his bat and pad. Steyn’s inswinger sneaked through, crashing into his stumps and spraying them all over.
