Watch: Craig McMillan and Shane Warne do not just share birthdays, but also a love for the unorthodox and it was on full display in an ODI in the early 2000s.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s open-chested batting stance has quite a few detractors, but McMillan is clearly a fan. While facing Warne in an ODI of the tri-series between Australia, New Zealand and South Africa in 2002, McMillan opened up his chest and turned to align himself to mid-wicket while turning his face towards the bowler.

“I have seen most things; first time I have seen this,” Richie Benaud quips from the commentary box as McMillan switched over to his new stance. His co-commentator goes on to add that he had seen McMillan practicing the stance in the nets. “It is a deliberate ploy. Very quickly early on in his stance, he comes straight again and is able to hit down the ground,” he says.

As McMillan drills one along the ground and takes a single, Warne has a quick word or two to share with the New Zealand batter. When the video was shared on Twitter years later, Shane Warne was quick to ask the Kiwi about it.

New Zealand went on to lose the tri-series to South Africa.
