Watch: KL Rahul was left fuming at Rishabh Pant after a terrible mix-up left both batters stranded at the same end during India’s innings in the second ODI against South Africa. However, some bizarre fielding from the hosts meant the two survived and continued their stay in the middle.
The last ball of the 15th over was sent to the left of midwicket by Pant, and Rahul decided to take a quick single. Pant set off as well, but aborted midway after the fielder slid and stopped the ball. Rahul had reached the striker’s end by then, and stopped forlornly, assuming his stay had come to an end. The throw was sent to the non-striker’s end, and India could have lost their third wicket of the day if bowler Keshav Maharaj had collected the throw. But with no backup fielder, the ball raced to deep midwicket, giving Rahul enough time to return to the non-striker’s end.
Though India did not lose a wicket, Rahul was not impressed and made his anger known to India’s wicketkeeper, who grinned sheepishly in response. The visitors, who put on 63 for the first wicket, lost Virat Kohli for the addition of another run, and a third wicket would have put the side in further jeopardy. The two players ended up making the most of the life that was given to them, taking India to 179-3, before Rahul was dismissed for 55. Pant was sent back for 85, his highest ODI score.
