Watch: A club match ended controversially last week, with the last batter run out by a 'Mankad' following a massive appeal for caught behind the ball before.

Hornchurch Athletic CC were chasing 177 to win against Stanford-Le-Hope on Saturday (July 29), but were struggling towards the back end of the innings. In the 39th over of the timed game, they needed 25 runs to win and were nine wickets down, with No.9 Noragal De Silva joined by No.11 Louis Parr at the crease.

Off the third ball of the over, Stanford-Le-Hope celebrated thinking they had sealed the win when De Silva seemingly edged a ball from spinner Jack Carter behind to the keeper. However, having run off without looking at the umpire thinking he had the wicket, Carter quickly returned when he realised the umpire hadn't raised his finger. The bowler and the rest of the fielders threw their arms up at the umpire, while keeper Matthew Page fell to his knees in disbelief when the decision stayed not out.

Having looked behind to the keeper before standing his ground, De Silva stood unmoved with his hand on his hip at the striker's end.

Carter had no choice but to come in again and bowl the next ball. Or seemingly no choice. As he neared his delivery stride, he realised Parr was about to wander out of his crease. He stopped, and before Parr could realise what was happening, whipped the bails off with him out of his crease.

This time, the umpire raised his finger immediately, despite the protestation of De Silva at the striker's end. De Silva held both his arms out in disbelief, before swinging his bat at the turf. The result was that Stanford-Le-Hope won the game by 24 runs.
