Watch: Dom Bess snares Cheteshwar Pujara in a freak dismissal on third afternoon of the first India-England Test in Chennai.
After being reduced to 73-4 on day three, the hosts, through a valiant stand between Rishabh Pant and Cheteshwar Pujara, battled back into the contest.
Pant looked to take the attack to Jack Leach in particular, launching the left-arm spinner for a succession of sixes to swing the momentum in India’s favour, eventually reaching a half-century off just 40 deliveries. Pujara, as resolute as ever in defence, acted as the perfect foil to Pant’s counter-attacking approach.
With the partnership in excess of 100, England looked bereft of ideas before Bess got the breakthrough in fortuitous fashion. Pujara, looking to pull a short-pitched delivery, struck the ball into Ollie Pope’s shoulder at short-leg before it popped straight into the hands of an obliging Rory Burns at mid-wicket.
Bess, who had already dismissed Virat Kohli and Ajinka Rahane earlier in the day, accounted for the dangerous Pant soon after.
