Watch: There were plenty of extraordinary strokes during Ben Stokes’ second day century against West Indies in Barbados, but none was better than a straight six off Alzarri Joseph that took him past 5,000 Test runs.

Stokes had already reach the top of the Three Ws stand at the opposite end, but something about this shot stood out. Perhaps it was because it came off a quick, rather than a spinner, with Joseph reaching 139kph on the delivery in question, or perhaps it was the little hop Stokes took just after contact, as if the strength of the swing had lifted himself off his feet.

Whatever it was, the shot was special for other reasons, bringing up an important milestone, and one few all-rounders have reached. Garry Sobers, Jacques Kallis, Ian Botham and Kapil Dev are the only other Test cricketers to have completed the double of 5,000 runs and 150 wickets.

Stokes eventually fell for 120, but he had put England in a dominant position, kickstarting a surge towards their first 500-plus score in more than a year.
