Watch: Ned Leonard was caught and bowled in bizarre circumstances after the ball deflected off the non-striker towards the bowler Benjamin Cliff during a T20 clash between the second XIs of Somerset and Yorkshire.
The incident occurred on Tuesday (July 16) when Somerset’s 2nd XI were batting in the final of the Second Eleven T20 Cup at Wormsley.
Leonard had walked out to bat in the 19th over and played the first ball he faced against Cliff for no run. Eager to get some crucial runs for the side, he looked to play the next delivery down the ground but saw in dismay as the ball struck non-striker Kasey Aldridge’s left shoulder before it ricocheted towards Cliff, who hung on to an easy catch.
Leonard departed for a two-ball duck as Somerset were bowled out for 191 in the first innings, with Cliff picking up 3-30.
Yorkshire were unable to chase down the target and were bowled out for 125, handing the opposition a convincing win by 66 runs.
The incident is similar to the unfortunate dismissal of Henry Nicholls, whose shot deflected off his partner Daryl Mitchell's bat towards Alex Lees at mid-off during the Headingley Test two years ago.
