Watch: In the final of the 2024/25 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, Sialkot batter Mohammad Waleed was run out in bizarre fashion after attempting to evade a throw from the bowler.

The summit clash of Pakistan's premier domestic first-class competition kicked off on January 2, with Peshawar taking on Sialkot at the National Stadium in Karachi.

Sialkot won the toss and put their opponents in to bat on a green top. The decision seemed to pay off as they reduced Peshawar to 145-5, before a recovery effort led by Zubair Khan (47) and Niaz Khan (31) helped them post 258. Amad Butt was the pick of the bowlers with 4-51, while youngster Ali Raza took 3-62.

Sialkot resumed batting on day two from 8-0, and lost Azan Awais and Ashir Mehmood in quick succession before Muhammad Huraira and Mohsin Riaz put on 102 for the third wicket. Mohammad Waleed walked out at 140-3 in the 48th over.

By the end of the 50th over, Waleed was yet to get off the mark. He blocked his eighth delivery, from Mohammad Amir Khan, back to the bowler, who fielded the ball in his follow-through and swiftly threw it back towards the stumps at the striker's end.

Waleed, who was in the way of the throw, evaded it by jumping. As it passed him, the ball hit the stumps and Peshawar appealed for a run out. The decision was referred to the third umpire, and replays showed that Waleed had one foot outside the crease and another in the air when the bails were disturbed – meaning he had to walk back for a duck in one of the more curious dismissals one might see.

Law 38 deals with run outs, with clause 38.2.1.1 making clear that "A batter is not run out [if]...he/she has been within his/her ground and has subsequently left it to avoid injury, when the wicket is broken". There is room for debate over whether that was the case here, with both side-on replays starting with Waleed seemingly already in mid-jump, and it not clear whether his back heel may have been in the crease a few frames before.
