Watch: On the third day of the first Test between Bangladesh and Pakistan, Shaheen Shah Afridi responded to ‘Mathew Wade’ taunts from the crowd by taking two wickets in an over to reduce the hosts to 14-2 in Chattagram.
The left-arm quick had been the subject of mocking chants of ‘Mathew Wade’ from the Bangladesh supporters, heard as he dove and slid to prevent a boundary on the fence. They were reminding him of his decisive over against Australia in the T20 World Cup semi final, an over which went for 22 thanks to three sixes off Wade’s bat.
However, Shaheen ended up having the last laugh over the home fans as he steamed in with the new ball to dismiss Shadman Islam and Najmul Shanto in the space of three deliveries. The Pakistan quick later added the wicket of Saif Hassan with a caught and bowled off a meanly directed bouncer.

Shaheen’s three wickets took his tally of Test scalps in 2021 to 42, equalling Ravichandran Ashwin as the leading Test wicket-taker this year. That leaderboard my change tomorrow, however, with Ashwin bowling on a fifth-day pitch against New Zealand and Shaheen continuing his charge against Bangladesh.
The Pakistan left-armer is having a stellar 2021. His 42 wickets in eight matches so far this year have come at an average 17.66, with two five-fors. His career average of 24.62 in 20 matches is just as impressive – he is quickly establishing himself as one of the best quicks in Test cricket.
