Watch: There was a moment of comedy on the first day of the second New Zealand-Bangladesh Test, although the tourists didn’t find it too funny, with a chance for a wicket turning into seven overthrows conceded in an error-strewn passage of play.
For those who like to label a six a ‘maximum’, here’s the perfect riposte. Ebadot Hossain, Bangladesh’s hero in their upset first-Test win, was bowling to Will Young, with the hosts having been inserted on a green Christchurch wicket.
The Black Caps had made a strong start, moving to 92-0 at lunch, but Ebadot created a chance in the first wicket after the break, Young edging to the cordon. Liton Das, at second slip, dove in front of first slip but could only parry the opportunity to the wicketkeeper’s right, with the ball racing down to fine leg.
A fielder set off in pursuit as New Zealand’s openers ran three, before launching the ball to Nurul Hasan, stationed behind the stumps. Sensing a chance at the non-striker’s end, Nurul hurled the ball again, but missed with his shy.
Ebadot, perhaps still ruing the missed catch, had neglected to back up, and having only seconds before been close to a wicket, he now found himself haring back up towards the long-off fence in order to try and save some runs.
The ball won the race, however, and New Zealand had an extra seven runs added to the total.
In the words of Code Sports’ Daniel Cherny, “Proper village stuff”.
Do yourself a favour and track down the footage of Will Young's seven for NZ against Bangladesh. Dropped catch and overthrows. Proper village stuff.

Watch the comedy overthrows below:
A dropped catch of his bowling, and then seven overthrows conceded which ended with him chasing the ball all the way to the boundary. Spare a thought for Ebadot Hossain.#NZvBAN pic.twitter.com/VZixFOzsf5
