Akeal Hosein took a stunning one-handed catch on the boundary to dismiss Nicholas Pooran in a thrilling Caribbean Premier League match between the Trinbago Knight Riders and the Guyana Amazon Warriors.
The catch came in the 18th over of a tense run chase of 139 that ended in a tie and forced the game to a super over. Not only did Hosein complete a stunning catch to dismiss Pooran, but he also bowled the final over of the main match where he conceded just seven runs and took a wicket in order to tie the game. Hosein finished the match with four-over figures of 1-16 to complement his catch and also had a very brief cameo with the bat scoring nine not out off the four balls he faced.
Guyana Amazon Warriors had looked dead and buried as they required 34 off 16 balls with just three wickets remaining. This was thanks to the 18th over starting with consecutive wickets as Ravi Rampaul dismissed Brandon King before Akeal Hosein put on his best Michael Jordan impression to claim the most audacious one-handed catch on the boundary. However, fantastic late hitting by Romario Shepherd and Naveen-ul-Haq had seen the game go down to the final over.
With eight required off the last six balls, Hosein’s over started with a dot and a wicket before a reverse swept four and three singles forced a tie.
Sunil Narine bowled the super over for Trinbago and conceded only six runs off it as he dismissed both Nicholas Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer. Which, in theory, should have been the end of the contest.
However, with only six runs to defend, Romario Shepherd struck with his first ball as he had Pollard caught on the long-on boundary. A dot was bowled next, which was followed by a single and then a scampered two, leaving the equation as four runs needed off the last two balls. Shepherd’s fifth delivery could have been called a wide as the batter Seifert fell over as he attempted to reach the delivery. But a dot ball was the verdict leading to four needed off the last ball. Seifert could only manage a single and the Guyana Amazon Warriors had managed to claim the most remarkable victory.
After all of that, Hosein’s catch had been in vain.
