Up against Australia’s stiff first innings target of 469, India were reduced to 50-3 when Rahane walked in to bat. Making a comeback to the Test team following a spectacular IPL 2023, he anchored the innings and held fort even as wickets fell at the other end.
At 152-6, India were deep in trouble, but Rahane continued playing his strokes in the first session on Friday, including smashing a maximum to get to his half-century. The last ball of the 46th over was short and angled down the leg side. Rahane moved across and pulled the Cummins delivery for a six over long leg to reach his 26th Test fifty.
It is his first half-century in 12 innings, last reaching the milestone in February 2021 against England. At the time of writing, Rahane is on 79* – his highest Test score since December 2020, when he made a classic Test century to drive a historic India comeback against Australia
