Watch: 15-year-old Aaryavir Sehwag has been named in Delhi’s Under-16 squad for the Vijay Merchant Trophy. Resurfaced footage shows him facing throwdowns from earlier this year, exhibiting tiny glimpses of his father Virender Sehwag’s legendary ball-hitting skills.
The 2007-born Aaryavir (or Aryaveer, according to the team sheet) was named in the Delhi & District Cricket Association’s 15-member squad for their Vijay Merchant Trophy 2022/23 fixture against Bihar. Officially classified as right-hand bat, right-arm leg spin on the team sheet, Sehwag occupied the 15th position in the Delhi lineup, along with three other reserve players for the match at Railway Grounds. He is three years elder to Sehwag’s other son, Vedant.
In the video now doing rounds, first posted on Aaryavir’s Instagram account in October, the teenager is seen facing throwdowns. The first shot is right out of Virender Sehwag’s book of batting: a clean flourish of the bat with little foot movement. However, further into the video, one can see that the younger Sehwag has his own unique style of tackling the cricket ball.
Mithun Manhas, Sehwag’s long-time Delhi teammate, makes a brief appearance as one of the throwers, suggesting that the video might have been recorded during the 2022 Legends League Cricket, a league featuring former cricketers that ran in September and October 2022. Sehwag played for Gujarat Giants, while Manhas was the assistant coach.
In an interview in 2019, Sehwag senior had said there was no pressure on his sons to become cricketers: “I don’t want to see another Virender Sehwag in them. They can become a Virat Kohli or a Hardik Pandya or a MS Dhoni. But they don’t have to [become] cricketers. They are free to choose their careers and we will help them achieve as far as possible. But the bottomline is to become good human beings. That’s non-negotiable.”
Last week, Tagenarine Chanderpaul– son of Sehwag’s long-time contemporary Shivnarine Chanderpaul – made his Test debut for West Indies against Australia in Perth.
