Watch: Teenagers Waqar Younis and Sachin Tendulkar, who made their debut in the same Test in 1989, were involved in a riveting duel when the fast bowler perfectly set up the batter, bowling three outswingers before dismissing him with an inswinger.

Waqar and Tendulkar made their debut in Karachi and got a chance to have a go at each other on November 16 – 33 years ago. The then-17-year-old Pakistan fast bowler had already picked up the wickets of Sanjay Manjrekar and Manoj Prabhakar and got his third when he dismissed Tendulkar with a beauty.

Up against Pakistan’s first innings score of 409, India were reduced to 41-4, with all eyes on the debutant Tendulkar, who had made waves in domestic cricket before getting an international call-up at the age of 16. He struck a couple of boundaries but was unable to carry on, getting bowled by an inswinger from Waqar on the 24th ball that he faced.

The right-handed quick sent down three outswingers, before getting the fourth to swing back in, beating Tendulkar with pace and swing. The ball went on to dismantle Tendulkar’s stumps, and he had to walk back for 15.

Waqar finished with 4-80 in the first innings, with India getting bowled out for 262. The match eventually ended in a draw after the visitors, who were set a fourth innings target of 453, reached 303-3. Tendulkar did not bat again in the Test, while Waqar, who only bowled two overs in the second innings, did not pick up another wicket.
