Watch: Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers turned back the clock with a blazing hundred yesterday (March 9) in his first competitive match since retirement, at SuperSport Park, Centurion.
Playing for Titan Legends against the Bulls Legends in the Taste of SuperSport Park, De Villiers evoked a sense of nostalgia by slamming a 28-ball century. His innings comprised of his trademark stroke-making, studded with 15 sixes. De Villiers got to his landmark with a gigantic pull. The Titans went on to post 278-7 in 20 overs.
In response, the Bulls were 125-8 after 14 overs when rain curtailed the match.
This was De Villiers’ first competitive match since retiring from all forms of cricket in 2021, with his last match coming for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL. For South Africa, he enjoyed an illustrious career after debuting in 2003. He finished as their second-leading run-getter across formats, with 19,864 runs at an average of 48.33. Seven years after calling time on his international career, he still holds the record of the fastest ODI hundred, off 31 balls.
In January, De Villiers announced his comeback to professional cricket with the second edition of the World Championship of Legends competition. The inaugural year featured the likes of Kevin Pietersen, Brett Lee and Jacques Kallis, as well as Shahid Afridi and Yuvraj Singh among others.
