Thirteen-year-old Anshu Nagar, who made her professional debut in the first Women’s Delhi Premier League match between South Delhi Superstarz and East Delhi Riders, rattled India batter Priya Punia during her opening spell yesterday (September 2).
Nagar took the new ball after East Delhi Riders decided to bat first. Bowling left-arm pace from over the wicket, she troubled India international Priya Punia off the second ball, hitting her on the pads with a full-length delivery. Nagar appealed, but the ball was pitching outside leg stump, as the onfield umpire deemed it not out.
She didn’t let batters go off the hook and maintained the pressure throughout, picking up 2-8 off her three overs. The Riders managed 114-8. Although the South Delhi Superstarz fell short by 11 runs in the end, Nagar’s emergence was one of their positives from the match.
Nagar was awarded for bowling the most economical spell of the match. She also clocked 107 kph on the speed gun, which is no mean feat in women's cricket given her age. It wouldn't be a surprise if she continues to make headlines throughout the rest of the season.
