Former India captain Virat Kohli and incumbent Test wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant have been named in Delhi's probables for the upcoming Ranji Trophy 2024/25 season.
In a move that aligns with BCCI's policy of bringing back established names to domestic cricket, Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant, both Test regulars, have been named in Delhi and District Cricket Association's probables list for the Ranji Trophy.
At the senior selection committee meeting helmed by Gursharan Singh (chairperson), K Bhaskar Pillai (selector), Rajeev Vinaik (selector), Sarandeep Singh (chief coach) and Rajan Manchanda (joint secretary), an 84-member list was released on September 24.
Kohli and Pant are the first two names on the list of players who are expected to undergo a fitness test on September 26. However, the statement clarifies that players on international duty will be exempted from the fitness test. Starting September 27, Kohli and Pant are expected to feature in the second India-Bangladesh Test, scheduled to take place in Kanpur.
It's the first time Kohli and Pant have been named in Delhi's Ranji probables since 2019.
The statement also notes that those under 23 years of age, if not selected for the Ranji Trophy squad, will be allowed to attend the U-23 team trials.
The unusually long list includes IPL players Ayush Badoni, Hrithik Shokeen, Anuj Rawat and Simarjeet Singh, among others. Mayank Yadav, the fast bowler who made waves during IPL 2024 for his extreme speeds, has also been named. Out-of-contention India quick Navdeep Saini, who was the third-highest wicket-taker in the 2024 Duleep Trophy, has been included, but Ishant Sharma has not been named.
