Five India and Bangladesh players have been sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) following heated scenes after the conclusion of the Under-19 Cricket World Cup final.
Bangladesh claimed a three-wicket win over India on Sunday at Potchefstroom, with the winning shot from Rakibul Hasan prompting the victors to run onto the field to celebrate. A scuffle then ensued between members of both teams, with words exchanged, too.
Rakibul, Md Towhid Hridoy, Shamim Hossain, Akash Singh and Ravi Bishnoi have all subsequently been charged with violating article 2.21 of the ICC’s code of conduct, which relates to “conduct that brings the game into disrepute”.

In addition to violating article 2.21, Bishnoi was found to have breached article 2.5, which relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an international match”. Bishnoi’s charge was in relation to actions following the dismissal of Avishek Das in the 23rd over of Bangladesh’s run chase.
Hridoy, Shamim and Singh have all received six demerit points, with Rakibul receiving five. For breaching article 2.5, Bishnoi has received two demerit points in addition to the five received for violating article 2.21.
The suspension points received by the players will be applied to the next international assignments they are most likely to participate in, either at senior or U19 level.

“The match was hard fought, as you would expect in an ICC U19 Cricket World Cup final, but the elation and disappointment experienced by some players after the game spilled over into unedifying scenes that have no place in our sport,” said Geoff Allardice, the ICC’s general manager of cricket. “Respect is at the very heart of the spirit of cricket, and players are expected to show self-discipline, congratulate the opposition on their successes and enjoy the success of their own team.
“It is disappointing that code of conduct charges needed to be laid after such a closely contested match, but it is important to reinforce the standard of behaviour that will be expected of these young players should they transition to senior international cricket.”
