Two days after becoming the first team to bowl only spin in a decided ODI, Oman repeated the act on Tuesday (February 18).
Oman elected to bat first against the USA in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 clash at Al Amerat and dismissed the opposition for 122. Spinners Shakeel Ahmed and Jay Odedra opened the bowling for Oman, with the former accounting for the top three batters in the line-up.
USA had lost four wickets by the end of the first powerplay, following which Milind Kumar offered some resistance. He made 47 in 82 balls but had little support from the other batters, none of whom could cross 20. USA were eventually bowled out for 122 in just 35.3 overs, with spinners bowling them all.
While slow left-armer Shakeel ended with 3-20, off-spinners Odedra and Siddharth Bukkapatnam scalped two wickets between them in the 10 overs that they bowled. Leg-spinner Samay Shrivastav ended with 2-41 in his seven overs with Aamir Kaleem, another slow left-arm orthodox bowler accounted for the wickets of skipper Monank Patel (0) and Saiteja Mukkamalla (2).
This is just the second time in history that only spinners have bowled in an ODI innings lasting longer than six overs, with Oman also pulling it off on Sunday. Against Namibia, Oman did not use a single over of seam in the 33.1 overs that they bowled, creating history.
However, the USA sprung a surprise in their bowling innings too, deciding to bowl all spin as well. It worked for them, as Oman were dismissed for just 65, with Nosthush Kenjige picking up 5-11 in 7.3 overs. Overall, 19 wickets in the game fell to spinners, with one run-out, the most slower bowlers have taken in an ODI.
USA are currently on top of the table while Oman are placed second in the tournament that will decide the teams that make it into the 2027 ODI World Cup Qualifiers.
