Allah Ghazanfar, the 18-year-old Afghanistan spinner, has raised eyebrows after switching back and forth between playing the 50-over U19 Asia Cup and the Abu Dhabi T10 League within the same week.

Both the tournaments are being held in the United Arab Emirates, prompting Ghazanfar to switch between Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi nearly every day. Here’s a sequence of events that began last week: at this point, he had already played three games for Team Abu Dhabi in the T10 league this season:

Nov 27: Abu Dhabi v Braves (Abu Dhabi)
Nov 29: Afghanistan U19 v Bangladesh U19 (Dubai)
Nov 30: Abu Dhabi v Warriors (Abu Dhabi)
Dec 1: Afghanistan U19 v Sri Lanka U19 (Sharjah)
Dec 1: Abu Dhabi v Bulls (Eliminator – Abu Dhabi)

His time switching between the two teams ended on Sunday, with the T10 team eliminated from the competition by Delhi Bulls. It meant that in five days, he had played five matches in three different cities, for two teams. Remarkably, he played two games on Sunday, first turning out for the Afghanistan junior team against Sri Lanka, before heading to UAE’s capital city for an eventual season-ending eliminator under lights.

He bowled his quota of ten overs, taking three wickets against Sri Lanka U19, and remained not out as Afghanistan lost by 131 runs. The early finish would have helped Ghazanfar, as he hit the road, travelling 160-odd kilometers to be in time for the T10 game. The second outing wasn’t as fruitful, as he conceded 38 runs from his two overs, but he did get the wicket of Shadab Khan.

It’s unclear as to how Ghazanfar has been allowed to feature in two tournaments simultaneously: one organised by the Asian Cricket Council, and the other, run privately by T Ten Sports Management. Wisden.com has reached out to the Afghanistan Cricket Board for a comment.

Ghazanfar is expected to feature in Afghanistan U19's final group match of the Asia Cup against Nepal on December 3. If they qualify for the semi-finals, they will have a match on December 6. If they win that match, the final is set for December 8. After that, though, there is finally going to be a short rest for Ghazanfar.

He will then return to national duties, having been named in the squad for the ODI series against Zimbabwe, starting December 17. Don’t be surprised if you do spot him playing some more cricket between now and then.
