10,000 runs in an exclusive club in ODI cricket. Since its first game in 1971, only 15 have managed to cross that threshold and only two of those players are still active in the format – Rohit Sharma having joined the list in the 2023 Asia Cup. India players make up the largest group from a single country on the list, with six players having scored more than 10,000 runs. Four players are on the list for Sri Lanka, two for West Indies, and one each from Australia, Pakistan and South Africa.
No player in women’s cricket has scored more than 10,000 runs so all of the names on the list have scored their runs in men’s ODIs.
Sachin Tendulkar – 18,426 runs
By far and away the leading run-scorer with almost double the centuries of the next highest. Tendulkar also holds the record for having played the most matches in the format at 463.
Kumar Sangakkara – 14,234 runs
The king of the left-handers is at No.2. He was part of the Sri Lanka side that made it to the finals of two consecutive World Cups.
Ricky Ponting – 13,704 runs
Ponting is the only Australian name on the list, with Adam Gilchrist being the next-highest run-scorer from Australia on 9,595. Ponting was part of three consecutive Cricket World Cup winning sides from 1999-2007.
Sanath Jayasuriya – 13,430 runs
Although fourth on the list of run-scorers, Jayasuriya has the lowest average of anyone with more than 10,000 runs. He played 445 matches and averaged 32.36.
Virat Kohli – 13,027 runs
Kohli is the newest name to the 13,000 run club, having passed the milestone while scoring yet another century against Pakistan in the 2023 Asia Cup.
Mahela Jayawardene – 12,650 runs
The third Sri Lanka inside the top six, Jayawardene captained his side in the final of the 2007 World Cup where they lost out in the final to Australia.
Inzamam-ul-haq – 11,739 runs
Inzamam is Pakistan’s leading run-scorer in ODI cricket, although he scored the joint least amount of centuries (10) of all players on this list.
Jacques Kallis – 11,579 runs
Kallis is the only representative from South Africa in the 10,000 club. A giant of south African cricket, he is the only player in history to have scored 10,000 runs and taken 250 wickets in both Test and ODI formats.
Sourav Ganguly – 11,363 runs
Ganguly is the last player to have scored more than 11,000 runs on this list. His captaincy took India to the 2003 World Cup final where they were beaten by Australia.
Rahul Dravid – 10,889 runs
Classically elegant and often an immovable presence at the crease, Dravid was part of the India side which won the Champions Trophy (co-winners with Sri Lanka) in 2002.
MS Dhoni – 10,773 runs
The architect of the modern-day white ball wicketkeeper-batter, it’s hard to think of a more important player in India’s white ball development in the modern era.
Chris Gayle – 10,480 runs
Now known for clearing boundaries in T20 leagues across the World, it shouldn’t be forgotten that Gayle is a record-holder across all three formats. He scored 25 centuries in ODIs, most memorably a double against Zimbabwe in 2015.
Brian Lara – 10,405 runs
Lara is short of Gayle’s West Indies record by just 74 runs, having played only two fewer matches.
Tillakaratne Dilshan – 10,290 runs
Another who was part of a truly great white ball era for Sri Lanka, Dilshan flourished after being promoted to open the innings and became one of the most destructive batters of the modern era.
Rohit Sharma – 10,031
The last name on the list is also its newest member. Rohit crossed the landmark in the 2023 Asia Cup.
