The current men's ODI World XI is made up of players who occupy the top spots in the ICC ODI rankings.
The selection criteria for this team is laid out as follows: we pick out the top four batters in the rankings, the wicketkeeper with the best batting rank, the two top-ranked all-rounders, and the four bowlers with the highest rating.
The selection of bowlers comes with a caveat. In order to maintain some form of balance, they will be selected keeping in mind a minimum of three seamers and two spinners.
For example, in the current iteration, Adam Zampa and Kuldeep Yadav do not make it to the side despite being ranked No.3 and No.4, as there are already three spinners in the side. Instead, the next top-ranked pace bowlers, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Jasprit Bumrah, have been selected.
The ICC batting list is generally heavy with top-order batters, which may lead to a few players batting out of position in this XI. However, considering the ability of modern-day batters to adapt to different demands, a change in the order should not stop them from acing their roles.
The current men’s ODI XI is based on the ICC rankings as on August 15, 2024.
